The Guidance Department at Fisher Middle School is utilizing Naviance Family Connection to enhance course, college and career planning. Naviance’s Family Connection is a powerful comprehensive online program that will be used by Fisher Middle School students, parents/guardians and school counselors to help students participate in career and college exploration.
Eighth graders were introduced to Naviance by the school counselors in order to help them discover career options based on their interests and strengths. The students investigated web resources for colleges and careers and completed a career interest inventory based on Holland’s Career Choice Theory. Parents of eighth graders were invited to a Naviance Informational Night in December.
In addition to the Naviance lesson, the Guidance Department is also showcasing ‘Colleges and Careers of the Month’. Maurisa Thomas, Eighth Grade Counselor, has partnered with colleges and universities to expose the students to college and career information and display it on the 8th grade bulletin board. A goal of the Guidance Department is to encourage middle school students to take the initiative to plan early. These programs illustrate the importance of exploring different options and being college and career ready now and throughout high school. Armed with this information, students can plan high school courses to complement their career pathway to ensure a successful and satisfying future.
